Blake’s medical journey began after he caught a virus he couldn’t seem to shake, even though his family had also been sick and recovered. It wasn’t until after three months of being sick that Blake’s doctor decided to order a CT scan. The results from the scan showed that his lymph nodes were enlarged, and Blake was immediately sent to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. Blake and his family later learned that he would be diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Blake and his family first discovered his wish eligibility from Make-A-Wish® Iowa during his first doctor’s appointment after his official diagnosis. In a time of hardship and uncertainty, Blake and his family were ecstatic to hear this exciting news. Blake soon began the process of choosing his wish, meeting with his wish granters to talk about his ideas. Blake finally decided to go to Walt Disney World® Resort to experience the magic of Star Wars and enjoy some relaxation on the beach.

As Blake waited until his treatments were completed to go on his trip, he was given an exciting experience to look forward to. During a tough time along his medical journey, he had a light at the end of the tunnel. Once he finished his treatment, Blake and his family excitedly prepared for the trip as they packed their bags, studied the specialized itinerary created by Make-A-Wish Iowa and set off for their new adventure.

Looking back on their trip, Blake and his family recall the fun they had together as they made lifelong memories. The trip allowed his entire family to step away from the stresses of his critical illness, and Blake’s wish experience provided him with the hope, strength and joy to continue on his medical journey.

When asked why supporting Make-A-Wish Iowa is important, Blake’s mother, Lisette, shares, “Our family was truly blessed by the ability to go on this trip! Supporting Make-A-Wish is so important because your donations allow families to have an amazing experience together despite the other avenues they have going on in life. We are beyond grateful for the experience and memories we created as a family. From Blake (and all of us), thank you!”
